On this opportunity we got a chance to talk about how to manage skateboard foot position and balance correctly on your board and the appropriate way to use your feet during a rite or performing some skills in the skate park, pool or on the street.

Let me begin mentioning the work you have to do to maintain your skateboard foot position and balance. First, you have to choose the position you assume when you are on the board. Most skaters assume two different stances according to the place of your feet on the deck. They are called the regular and the goofy stance.

The goofy stance is when your left foot is facing forward, this position is called “regular”, but if it is your right foot in front, the stance you have assumed is named “goofy”.

Try any of these stances and make yours whichever feels comfortable to you.

Then, your feet have to be placed just behind the bolts; this guarantees a perfect balance and a better control of the skateboard. Putting your feet in the middle of the deck doesn’t give you much control of the board and it is easy to break that way.

To practice your position on the board is recommendable that you start practicing on a very soft surface like a carpet or the grass in your backyard or in a park. Once you skateboard is placed on one of these surfaces, so it is prevented to move and make you fall from it, stand on it and try your balance. If you don’t feel totally secure about this, you can also put an object in front and behind the wheels to prevent any movement of your board. You can’t achieve balance with any of these methods, try to hold to rail or wall while standing on your board and then stand on your board as you are stop holding any of them.

Another effective method to work on your balance is shifting way along the deck. It is not necessary to move back and forth much to work on your balance. Just try to maintain your body centered while shifting your weight from your heels to your toes in order to be stable on the board. Practice this every day for 15 minutes.

Now that you learn to keep your balance on still board, it is time to try it when you are moving it.

On a level surface, such as concrete court or sidewalk, move slightly forward placing your front foot on the board and push it forward with the other foot. While the board is moving, put your other foot on the skateboard and start working your balance. Remember to keep your knees bended and your body weight over the foot on the board. Keep riding the board with both on the deck and wait until it stops. Repeat this exercise several times as possible. You can do also this on an incline surface if you want, but be sure that the inclination is slight to avoid any grave injury. Whether a level or an incline surface, once you are riding the board, you have to use your heels to shift it or the toes to turn it to the side you wish.

Here I have to remember you that all these balance exercises have to be done with correct skateboard training equipment. A good pair of sneakers is a possibility to ride a board, but in this case I would recommend trying skate shoes which are wider than the previous ones and thus maintain more contact with the deck.

Along with the shoes, you can also have a custom made skateboard according to your needs. There are skateboards exclusively made for dirt rails or mountain boarding and others that can be only used in skate parks or sidewalks. Choosing one of these customized boards will give you an easier time of balancing on it.

And, finally, something that I like to repeat all over the time, it is the issue of protecting. Practicing your balance and the right way to move your feet may sound a safe activity, but you can never be sure nothing will happen. So, as I always say, it is better to be safe than sorry is the time to look for a good protective helmet, wrist guards, elbow and knee pads for practicing and exercising on your board.
